This included those who recently signed the Citizens’ Declaration, such as suspended Umno Deputy President Muhyiddin Yassin, former Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir and party stalwart Sanusi Junid.
The club’s president, Mohd Anuar Mohd Yunus, said members who aligned themselves or cooperated with the “Save Malaysia” movement were akin to a cog in a huge machine that wanted to bring Umno and BN down.
“It is compulsory Umno cleanses itself of such elements,” he told reporters at PWTC.
The club later handed over a memorandum, declaring its support for Prime Minister Najib Razak, to Umno Secretary-General Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor.
Last week, former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, along with Muhyiddin, Mukhriz and Opposition leaders from DAP, PKR and Amanah, signed a document calling for Najib’s resignation and institutional reforms.
Anuar went on to claim that the people could not accept Mahathir’s decision to cooperate with the Opposition, especially DAP.
This was especially so as the former premier had previously never missed an opportunity to criticise the secular party at the Umno General Assembly.
“How could he join forces with DAP? He knows what DAP is.”
