Mukhriz: Opposition put national interests first

Former Kedah MB claims Opposition signed Citizens’ Declaration to oust Najib Razak although it will be easier for it to win the GE14 if Najib stays on as prime minister.

PUCHONG:
The Opposition put national interests ahead of its ambitions when its leaders signed the Citizens’ Declaration.

Former Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir went on to commend the Opposition for this.

He claimed the Opposition actually wanted Prime Minister Najib Razak to remain at the helm as it would make it easier for them to win the next general election.

“They are together with us in our efforts to oust Najib as they realise that the nation’s interests are at stake even though their chances to win the 14th General Election are high.”

He stressed the Opposition had no interest in saving Umno, unlike his father, former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who spearheaded the initiative.

The Ayer Hitam assemblyman said this at a meet-the-people session at Kampung Sungai Rasau here this evening. The event saw about 100 people attending.

Mukhriz insisted he was still “pretty much an Umno man” and wanted people from Umno or BN to oust Najib.

On March 4, Mahathir, along with former Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and Umno Vice-President Mohd Shafie Apdal as well as Opposition leaders, including DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang and PKR number two Mohamed Azmin Ali, called on Najib to step down at the launch of the Citizens’ Declaration.
