We aren’t paying voters not to vote, says Senadin incumbent

Voters should take down names and snap pictures of culprits spreading rumours

MIRI :
Senadin SUPP chairman Lee Kim Shin says rumours that the party was paying voters not to turn out to vote are false and have been spread with nasty intentions.

The BN candidate for Senadin wants voters who are confronted by individuals or groups wanting to stop them from voting or taking their identity cards, to snap pictures and lodge a police report.

“Those who started the rumours have bad intentions and are trying to confuse the voters. Not allowing people to vote is an election offence. If you encounter this situation, take down the names or snap pictures of the culprits and report them to the police.

“Isn’t it stupid telling people not to vote. If people don’t vote how can we win?” Lee told reporters in a press conference at his Senadin SUPP office here today.

Lee, the four-time Senadin assemblyman, also said it was the first time he had heard of these rumours.

He said his staff and other SUPP officials had received “quite a few” calls from voters demanding money and wanting to confirm the rumours.

“I have relayed the information to the (Miri) deputy police district chief and the Special Branch. I hope they will investigate this matter swiftly,” he said.

Lee is facing DAP’s Dr Bob Baru Langub and PBDS Baru’s Philemon John Endau in this election.

The incumbent won with a majority of 58 votes in the 2011 State Election against PKR’s Michael Teo.
