Man claims trial to 2 charges of cheating by impersonation

Businessman S Surain Naidu allegedly deceived his victims by impersonating a Hindu priest and the secretary to the Sultan of Johor.

JOHOR BAHARU:
A businessman pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate’s Court here, today to two counts of cheating by impersonating a Hindu priest and secretary to the Sultan of Johor, between November 2011 and May this year.

On the first count, S Surain Naidu, 27, was charged with fraudulently deceiving V Rajkumar, 58, that he was a priest and induced him to hand over RM559,500 in cash and jewellery worth RM166,000.

It was to conduct prayers to prevent any bad luck befalling Rajkumar.

Surain Naidu who hails from Pasir Gudang, here, was charged with committing the offence at No 18, Jalan Undan 3, Taman Perling, here, about 8pm, between early November 2011 and April 7, 2012.

On the second count, Surain Naidu was charged with fraudulent intent to cheat M Sugumaran, 21, by claiming that he was a secretary to the Sultan of Johor and could help secure Sugumaran’s father’s release from prison.

He induced Sugumaran to hand over RM52,800 in cash.

Surain Naidu is alleged to have committed the act in a KFC Restaurant, Jalan Badik 1, Taman Puteri Wangsa, Ulu Tiram, here, about 11am on May 12.

Magistrate Noor Aisyah Ahmad set bail at RM10,000 with two sureties for the first charge and RM10,000 with one surety for the second charge and fixed July 26 for mention of the case.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Siti Asmah Zainal Ariffin prosecuted while Surain Naidu was unrepresented.
