Police nab hit-and-run suspect captured in video

Sabah police have nabbed the suspect of a hit-and-run incident in Kota Kinabalu, captured on video and which has since gone viral, Malay Mail Online reported today.

In the video, the suspect, who was on a motorcycle, ran a red light in Jalan Kolam in the city and hit a 13-year-old schoolgirl who was crossing the road. The suspect stopped momentarily to glance at the girl before scooting off.

Kota Kinabalu police chief M Chandra said the suspect, a 23-year-old restaurant worker was picked up by police at 8am today, after they tracked him down via his motorcycle number plate.

Chandra said the suspect claimed he was an asthma patient and was rushing to his workplace to retrieve his inhaler.

“We are holding him for further investigations under Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act for reckless driving. Investigations are still ongoing,” said Chandra.

Under the law, the suspect faces five years’ imprisonment and/or a fine if he is found guilty.

Chandra also said the suspect had a valid driving licence and was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

According to the report, the incident occurred at 5.55pm yesterday, while the suspect was allegedly travelling to work which began at 6pm.

The video, which made its rounds on social media, has drawn the ire of netizens.
