IIUM, in a statement yesterday, said 80 teams from universities all over Asia participated in the competition.
“IIUM was represented by Mubarrat Wassey, an economics student, and Ameera Natasha Moore, a law student.
“Mubarrat and Ameera won the first and second overall best speaker awards respectively while the second debate team comprising Ahmad Syarifuddin Ahmad Fakhri and Sara Abdul Rahim, received the top ten speakers award,” said the statement.
The final round saw a four-cornered fight where IIUM emerged victorious against three institutions of higher learning from Singapore, namely the Singapore Management University (SMU), Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and Yale-NUS College (YNC).
IIUM said the next target for the team was to win the World Universities Debating Championship scheduled to be held in December in Thessaloniki, Greece.
