KUALA LUMPUR:
Umno Overseas Clubs (UOC) monitor the activities of Malaysian students overseas to prevent them from getting involved in terrorism.

Auckland UOC president Siti Nurbaya Esa said they had forged a close relationship with the Malaysian embassy in New Zealand.

“Every Malaysian student studying abroad must register with Education Malaysia (EM) that is in charge of overseas students. EM will report directly to the ambassador concerned.

“All the students are being monitored. We (UOC) also monitor the students in our area,” she told Bernama after attending the UOC Presidents’ Conference to mark the Umno General Assembly 2016 at the Putra World Trade Centre, here today.

Meanwhile, Tanta OUC president Shahrul Naim Mat Ludin said they regularly organised information programmes related to terrorism and extremism for the benefit of Malaysian students in Egypt.

This was to ensure that students there were well aware of the dangers of terrorism and extremism as well as to prevent them from falling under the influence of militant groups such as Islamic State.

“The move to hold the programme once every two months was taken after seeing how militant groups were actively recruiting members online,” he added.
