PETALING JAYA:
Umno leader Puad Zarkashi has brushed off former party colleague Annuar Musa’s swipe at Umno over apparent “tactical” moves to manage optics concerning its relationship with DAP.

Puad reminded Annuar, a PAS central committee member, that he had previously called for Umno to be open to the possibility of working with DAP.

Annuar formerly served as secretary-general of Umno and Barisan Nasional before being sacked from the party in December 2022. He joined PAS a few months later.

“Annuar must have forgotten that he used to be supportive of working with DAP. He once said there should be no problems with Umno cooperating with DAP if both parties shared common ground,” Puad told FMT.

The Umno Supreme Council member said it would not be impossible for PAS to work with DAP again one day, since such a move would be politically beneficial for both.

“I believe that when the time comes, PAS will work with DAP. That’s just political tactics,” he said.

Yesterday, Annuar mocked Umno over several “tactical” moves related to Pakatan Harapan, which he claimed were sanctioned and later reversed by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He cited Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh’s alleged resignation as Melaka executive councillor in January, the Negeri Sembilan political turmoil last month, and Johor Barisan Nasional’s declaration that it would go solo in the next state election.

DAP and Umno are currently partners in the federal government despite their decades-long enmity and bickering even as allies.

PAS also used to be allies with DAP under the Pakatan Rakyat coalition, which was formed in 2008 before it fell apart seven years later.

Separately, Puad played down the notion of differences in views between Umno leaders and Zahid, saying such instances were a norm in politics.

He said politicians cannot be too rigid in their approach and must evolve according to the current situation and needs.

“We have to be dynamic and change according to current times and needs, but what’s paramount is the objective of our struggle,” he said.
