Putrajaya refutes Rafizi’s cost projection of MRT project

Finance Minister II says the RM21 billion the PKR man is harping on is for the entire stretch of Sungai Buloh to Kajang, not till the Semantan station only.

KUALA LUMPUR:
Putrajaya today dismissed Rafizi Ramli’s calculation on the overall cost of the MRT project, saying the PKR vice-president got it all wrong.

Finance Minister II Johari Ghani said Putrajaya calculated the cost from the Sungai Buloh MRT station to Kajang, which amounted to RM21 billion.

“He (Rafizi) counted from Sungai Buloh to Semantan. So his calculation is wrong. He does not know how to count,” Johari told reporters after officiating the 20th anniversary of the KL-Ampang LRT in Bukit Jalil, here today.

However, Johari is not the first to dispute Rafizi’s claim.

Several days ago, Barisan Nasional strategic communications director Abdul Rahman Dahlan accused Rafizi of mixing up his facts regarding the cost of the MRT phase one project and pointed out that all news reports clearly quoted Najib as saying the cost of RM21 billion was for the entire MRT project spanning 51km.

The first phase of the MRT project – the Sungai Buloh-Kajang line – was launched last Friday, while phase two, which connects Semantan and Kajang, is scheduled to begin operations on July 31 next year.

Rafizi had earlier said the RM21 billion figure was only for Phase 1 of the MRT, covering 21km and 12 stations. He also stood by his claim that the cost of the MRT would surpass RM100 billion in total and challenged Najib, the Cabinet and MRT Corp to sue him if he was wrong.

The Pandan lawmaker also gave Najib seven days to take legal action or apologise for misleading the public.
