Penang government acting like mafia, says BN

But Gerakan did not make any statement calling leaders racist, it adds.

Teng-Chang-Yeow
GEORGE TOWN:
The Penang government’s crackdown on dissidents is comparable to the mafia, claimed state Barisan Nasional chairman Teng Chang Yeow, referring to the city council’s alleged selective enforcement on a cafe.

The owner of the cafe has been vocal in his criticism against the Penang government’s policies on the Chinese newspapers recently.

Elaborating on his “mafia” claim, Teng said he would continue to highlight the atrocities of the Penang government on the way it handles critics and would not bow to pressure from the state.

“It is sad to say the Penang government has become a mafia-style government. You criticise, you get retaliated. This is a below-the-belt attack.

“We were in power for 40 years and we are not going to sit down and cry… we will fight back,” Teng said in a press conference at the state Gerakan headquarters here today.

On a related note, Teng, said Penang executive councillor Chow Kon Yeow had accused Gerakan leaders of slamming the city council for purposely taking action on businesses owned by the Chinese.

Chow, who is Local Government Committee chair, accused Gerakan of making the matter a political and racist one in a Facebook post yesterday.

He said the city council was merely enforcing the law and there were no ulterior motives.

The owner claimed the timing of the demolition came a day after a “warning” of sorts by a DAP-appointed municipal councillor on Facebook.

The city council replied by saying it was just doing its job as the structure was illegal.

Gerakan lodged a police report over the demolition yesterday, alleging abuse of power.

MCA, for its part, lodged a report with the national Internet regulators, MCMC, over the municipal councillor’s Facebook status update.
