PETALING JAYA:
Controversial Umno division chief Jamal Yunos has denied calling local songstress Siti Nurhaliza infertile, a remark that inflamed more than just her fans.

“When did I come out with a statement calling Siti Nurhaliza infertile? Where is the WhatsApp message? Show me a print screen of the message.

“I did not say such a thing, don’t simply accuse me. If I say anything it will be on my Facebook.

“If you want to take statements from a WhatsApp group then that’s the problem. Don’t tell me that you, as media who have readers and viewers, will publish something that has not been validated,” he told FMT.

He said his official statements will be issued only through Facebook.

The FMT report referred to by Jamal was based on a comment sent by him to a WhatsApp group with reporters. His comment was also reported independently by another news site, Berita Daily.

Last Wednesday, the Sungai Besar Umno chief marched to the Selangor state secretariat building in a towel to protest the water disruptions in the Klang Valley.

Siti was among those who criticised Jamal’s “towel protest”. The popular singer uploaded a picture of Jamal at the building wearing only a towel on her Instagram account.

Jamal was reported to have responded to the criticism making fun of Siti for still not having a child. This, in turn, received harsh criticism from the public.

“If Siti Nurhaliza wants to comment about me then that’s up to her. She is the most famous singer in our country.

“I’ve always been her fan and her comments about me are regarding the people whose everyday lives have been affected,” he said.

Jamal said he would have apologised to Siti if he had indeed made an offensive remark but insists he had not issued any statement that she was infertile.

“The media needs to ensure that what they publish is accurate. Don’t publish things that have not been verified. If you have a recording of it coming from my mouth then I will admit it but if you’re getting your news from comments and jokes on WhatsApp groups, then is this considered an official source?

“Keep this in mind, I will not say such things. I’ve only found FMT as having published that statement and nothing anywhere else.”

“If it’s my statement then I’ll take full responsibility but it isn’t so you take the responsibility. I will issue a response today,” he said.
