KUALA LUMPUR: Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar today admitted he and his family know Gopinathan Krishnan, the top suspect arrested last month as the key “intermediary”’ in a major police protection racket for vice activities in Melaka.
“Yes, he is known to me and my family,” Khalid said in response to questions over his links with the suspect, as revealed by whistleblower site Sarawak Report.
Asked how close he was to Gopinathan, Khalid retorted against the nature of the question.
“Why do you want to ask to that extent? Now you ask me how close we are. Can hold hands? Can kiss? Be reasonable lah,” Khalid replied.
Sarawak Report said it was in possession of documents from sources indicating that Gopinathan was in direct telephone contact with Khalid.
The site said Gopinathan had contacted Khalid’s brother-in-law, Mohd Isa Hussin, who allegedly runs a business selling firearms and accessories, Nilai Arms. It was revealed previously that Khalid’s daughter holds a majority share in this venture.
Khalid said those who know him and his family, but are involved in illegal activities, will have to answer to the law.
“In this case Gopi. If he carried out any illegal activities, the MACC (Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission) is probing him and we are cooperating with them.
“Those who know me and my family, if they have done something behind my back, I might not know everything. But they will have to answer for it.
“My officers and I are not involved in any illegal activities,” he said after launching the road safety campaign for the festive season, Ops Selamat 11, here.
Khalid added his telephone number was known to everyone and he could not keep track of everyone who calls him.
“Everybody calls me and sends messages to me. If you want, you can look at my bill.
“People ask me this and that. How I do know who calls me?”
Khalid said Sarawak Report has an agenda against him and the police force as this was not the first accusation hurled against him and his men.
“Previously, she (Clare Rewcastle-Brown) had said I was junketing in Rome on government expense, but I was actually with the Pahang sultan’s son taking delivery of two helicopters.
“But she said I was on holiday. Then she accused me of giving government contracts to my family,” he said, adding that all the accusations will not weaken him as they are not true.
