KUALA LUMPUR:
The Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) has set up a Shariah and Harmonisation of Law division to address issues related to Islam and shariah laws that arise at the federal and international levels.

In a statement issued here today, the AGC said the division would be the focal point for shariah issues referred to the department.

It said this was based on Clause (2) Article 145 of the Federal Constitution, which states it is the duty of the attorney-general to advise the Yang di-Pertuan Agong or the cabinet or any minister on legal matters.

“They include legal advice, formulation and coordination of shariah laws, ratification of an international convention with shariah implications and harmonisation between civil and shariah laws to overcome conflict in the jurisdiction of the civil and shariah courts,” it said.

The AGC also expressed hope that the setting up of the new division would ensure a more effective delivery of its services in tandem with current needs.
