PUTRAJAYA: Malaysians will go to the polls on May 9, 2018, the Election Commission (EC) announced today.
Nomination day is fixed on April 28, to finalise candidates in 222 parliamentary seats and 505 state seats.
Campaigning will run from April 28 to 11.45pm on May 8.
Early voting will take place on May 5.
EC chairman Mohd Hashim Abdullah said there were 14,940,624 registered voters. Of the total, 13,255 are early voters and 3,653 are overseas voters.
“The EC has held a meeting and established that polls must be held within 60 days of the date of dissolution,” he said at a press conference.
Prime Minister Najib Razak announced the dissolution of Parliament over the weekend, paving the way for what many believe will be the toughest election yet for Barisan Nasional.
It will be Najib’s second general election, after the 2013 polls which returned the ruling coalition to power, although it failed to regain its two-thirds parliamentary majority which it lost in 2008.
