GEORGE TOWN: Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad himself chose Penang to host a grand run-up to the Merdeka celebrations, federal minister Gobind Singh Deo said.

The event called “Fly the Jalur Gemilang” and the “Sayangi Malaysiaku Concert” will begin today in Penang and then proceed to Putrajaya for Merdeka Day on Aug 31.

The event will end in Kota Kinabalu for the Malaysia Day 2018 celebration on Sept 16.

Gobind said today’s grand-scale event will be aired live on RTM’s TV1 channel at 9pm, where viewers can watch Mahathir, his deputy Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and other Pakatan Harapan leaders.

Viewers will also get to see Bunkface in concert, singing the Merdeka theme song “Kita Punya Malaysia”, and their other hits. It was reported that Mahathir himself picked the song.

Gobind attended a rehearsal of the event at the Esplanade.

The event is organised by his communications and multimedia ministry.

This year’s theme for the 2018 National Day is “Sayangi Malaysiaku”.
