Sultan hits out at Johor councillor for not using Malay

Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar warns Iskandar Puteri city councillor after Bahasa Malaysia excluded in official invite.

PETALING JAYA: The Johor sultan today slammed an Iskandar Puteri city councillor over his failure to use Bahasa Malaysia in an official letter, after a picture of the document, written only in Chinese and English, went viral.

In a Facebook post, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar said any official letter involving the state government or local authorities in Johor must be written in the national language.

“If the councillor involved does not know how to do his or her job, just resign. This is a warning; do not repeat this mistake.”

The letter, which made the rounds on social media, was an invite to residents to attend a dialogue to discuss demolishing a roadblock. It was signed by Iskandar Puteri councillor Chan Wei Khjan.

Perling assemblyman Cheo Yee How, of DAP, was invited to attend.

The Johor ruler said that the palace had never written any official letters in two languages.

Sultan Ibrahim said all parties must respect Bahasa Malaysia and use it in any official communication pertaining to matters involving the state government or local authorities.
