PUTRAJAYA:
The Malaysian government respects Singapore’s “rule of law and due process” following the execution of Malaysian citizen Prabu N Pathmanathan, who was hanged at Changi prison this morning for drug trafficking.

In a statement, Wisma Putra confirmed the execution, which was carried out at 6.23am in the presence of a Malaysian High Commission representative and Prabu’s family members.

Wisma Putra said on humanitarian grounds, the government of Malaysia had appealed to the republic for leniency.

Prabu, 31, was sentenced to death for committing several acts for the purpose of trafficking 227.82g of heroin into the island on Dec 31, 2014.

The execution took place after the President of Singapore’s office rejected Prabu family’s clemency petition Thursday night.

Earlier, Prabu’s family’s lawyer N Surendran said the family had claimed the body for cremation today.
