RM3.5 mil spent on maintaining Equanimity till October

The amount includes legal fees and port services, says finance ministry.

The Equanimity, valued at US$250 million (RM1 billion) is now docked in Langkawi.
KUALA LUMPUR:
The government has so far spent RM3.5 million to maintain superyacht Equanimity, which has been embroiled in controversy following allegations that it was bought using funds from 1MDB, the Dewan Rakyat was told.

In a written reply to Noh Omar (BN-Tanjong Karang), the finance ministry said the fee also included legal costs and port services.

Noh had asked on the status of Equanimity and the overall cost of bringing it back to Malaysia.

The ministry said 1MDB obtained a court order on Oct 5 to appoint Winterbothams as appraiser and condition surveyor of Equanimity.

“Through the same court order, Burgess was appointed as a single broker to assist in the marketing and sale of Equanimity. This is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

“In addition, the judgment in default has been filed and the hearing process is expected to be set by the court in the near future,” said the ministry.

The 91.5m-long vessel arrived in Port Klang on Aug 7 after the Indonesian authorities agreed to release the vessel to their Malaysian counterparts.

The Equanimity was seized in Bali on February at the request of US authorities as part of a multi-billion dollar corruption investigation launched by the US Department of Justice (DoJ) related to 1MDB.
