In a written reply, the finance ministry said this number was based on unconfirmed information.
It added that the scholarships were valued at RM3.4 million.
“The students had sat for SPM in 2009 and 2010,” it said.
It also said it had approved scholarships for another 631 students who had since completed their studies.
The ministry was replying to Azrina Surip (PH-Merbok) who had asked about some 500 students sponsored by 1MDB.
She also asked if the government had plans to help them continue their studies.
The ministry said the 1MDB foundation needed at least three shareholders but had only one at present.
“To ensure that the foundation can operate as usual, another two shareholders must be appointed.”
