Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mujahid Yusof Rawa said RM22,900 is the actual cost to perform the haj.
“If the pilgrims do not have enough money, it means they cannot afford to go on the haj.”
Mujahid said any move to reduce the subsidy will help the government reduce RM400 million in costs, he said.
He said pilgrims had been paying a fixed amount of RM9,980 to perform the haj, which meant the government had been subsidising RM19,920 per pilgrim.
Mujahid was replying to a supplementary question from Mohd Nizar Zakaria (BN-Parit), who asked if the government had plans to revamp or review subsidies given to pilgrims.
Mujahid said over the last 10 years, TH had helped to reduce the pilgrims’ financial burden but could no longer continue doing so.
