ISKANDAR PUTERI:
The Johor government has not ruled out the possibility of getting local and foreign experts to find a long-term solution to the air pollution issue at Pasir Gudang.

Education, Human Resources, Science and Technology Committee chairman Aminolhuda Hassan said today that finding the best solution would encompass a holistic study on and evaluation of Pasir Gudang.

“We are looking at providing the best solution for all, including the people and industrial workers, in terms of health and safety.

“We are gathering views and proposals, (including) getting experts from the country and abroad for their opinions. It will take time,” he said when asked at an event here whether the state government had plans to relocate the residents and industries in Pasir Gudang.

Meanwhile, Johor Department of Environment (DoE) director Wan Abdul Latiff Wan Jaffar said DoE was following up with the factories to ensure that devices to detect volatile organic compounds were supplied to affected schools.

“So far, 53 factories have agreed to supply the devices,” he said.

Air pollution, allegedly from the numerous chemical factories in Pasir Gudang, has affected people living near factories twice this year. Many of those affected, including schoolchildren, were sent to hospital after having inhaled the toxic fumes.
