PETALING JAYA:
PKR’s Anwar Ibrahim has joined the public outrage over a proposal by one of the party’s senators who asked for a law to protect men from being seduced into committing sexual crimes.

The PKR president also urged Mohd Imran Abd Hamid to retract his proposal that Parliament enact a sexual harassment act to protect men from the actions, words and clothing of women which could seduce them and lead them into committing crimes such as incest, rape and molest.

“I wish to make it clear that PKR rejects the proposal as it is absurd and demeans women.

“It also depicts men as immoral and easily seduced into committing heinous acts,” the PKR president said.

Imran, a retired navy admiral, made the proposal during a Dewan Negara debate on the Syarie Legal Profession (Federal Territories) Bill 2019.

“This is important, we men need to be protected. The actions and clothing of women can seduce us into breaking the law and cause us to be charged with a crime,” he had said.

The remarks sparked outrage from women’s groups and rights activists.

“The idea that victims are unable to access justice or demand some form of redress after undergoing such a dehumanising experience simply adds to the creation of a culture of fear and violence,” said the All Women’s Action Society.
