Liew attacks BN man for Tg Piai’s decline over 20 years

Johor DAP chief runs down MCA's Wee for seeking a comeback despite 'dismal record' of service since the 1990s.

Johor DAP leader Liew Chin Tong has promised to help rejuvenate Tanjung Piai.
PETALING JAYA:
Johor DAP chairman Liew Chin Tong has attacked the Barisan Nasional for seeking a comeback in Tanjung Piai despite “a dismal record” and a lack of progress in the area over 20 years.

He promised to help rejuvenate the constituency “as this beautiful place has been neglected by Barisan Nasional” despite being served by the MCA’s Wee Jeck Seng.

He noted that more people are leaving the Tanjung Piai constituency to seek a better life elsewhere.”What went wrong?,” he said.

Liew noted that Wee had been serving the constituency since the 1990s, starting as an assistant for former MCA president Ong Ka Ting. He later contested and won the Pekan Nanas state assembly seat in 2004, became MP for Tanjung Piai in 2008, retaining the seat in 2013, and was deputy minister for youth and sports from March 2008 to June 2010.

He said the decline of Pontian and Pekan Nanas had caused Wee’s defeat to a Pakatan Harapan candidate in 2018.”Even with his dismal record, he insists to make a comeback,” he added.

Wee, representing the BN, is one of six candidates seeking to be elected as MP for the Tanjung Piai in a by-election on Nov 16.

Liew said that as the Johor DAP chairman, he is committed to assisting Pakatan Harapan candidate Karmaine Sardini to retain Tanjung Piai for the sake of continuity.

“We need to rejuvenate the constituency as this beautiful place has been neglected by BN,” he added.

Karmaine, he said, will be assisted to drive towards reforms and progress in Tanjung Piai.

He said PH politics are colour blind as the coalition believes Malaysians of all races can work together towards a common goal, and unlike BN, they are against the racial game of segregation, and divide-and-rule.

“The people of Tanjung Piai deserve better,” he said.
