Govt now allows import of face masks, says minister

Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi also says the export of face masks has been banned.

PUTRAJAYA:
The government says face masks can now be imported into the country in order to help tackle the shortage during the Covid-19 crisis.

Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi said the price of masks had also been increased from 80 sen to RM2 apiece.

“I hope this will encourage suppliers to import masks into Malaysia.

“This is one way we can help increase the supply of masks and ensure their availability,” he told reporters after chairing a meeting with Agriculture and Food Industry Minister Ronald Kiandee here today.

He said the government had also decided to ban the export of face masks during this period.

This follows his remarks earlier this month that the government was considering the import of face masks.

Meanwhile, Ronald said there is a sufficient supply of chicken and eggs in the country, adding that his ministry had received no complaints of traders selling eggs at RM1 each.

“We are keeping in close contact with livestock farmers, and the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority is doing its best to facilitate supplies,” he said.
