GEORGE TOWN: Penang will allow Muslims to perform Friday prayers in mosques and suraus from next week but the congregation will be limited to 15 at any one time.
State mufti Wan Salim Wan Mohd Noor said all mosques and suraus must adhere to social distancing and strict sanitisation rules.
“We are guided by Jakim’s (Islamic Development Department of Malaysia) rules on congregational prayers and funeral rites during Covid-19,” he said.
Wan Salim said all mosques and suraus will be given a special set of standard operating procedures so as to reduce the likelihood of Covid-19 spread.
He said the decision to open up mosques and suraus for Friday prayers was made on May 14 by the state Mosque Development Committee.
