PETALING JAYA: Dr Mahathir Mohamad received birthday greetings from an unlikely well-wisher as he turns 95 today, months after his resignation as prime minister triggered the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government.
In a post on Twitter, Najib Razak who was succeeded by Mahathir after PH won the May 9 election in 2018 wished his former mentor a long and blessed life filled with good health and peace.
“Semoga Tun Dr Mahathir dilimpahkan rahmat, ketenangan, kesihatan dan dilanjutkan usia.
“Happy 95th birthday, sir,” he said.
Birthday wishes have been pouring in on social media for Mahathir, Malaysia’s longest serving leader who has also held the position of prime minister twice.
Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh, who was deputy women, family and community development minister in Mahathir’s second Cabinet, also wished the veteran statesman a happy birthday in a Facebook post accompanied by a picture of them together.
“This photo was taken on a day I sought to hear for myself your explanation on all the questions I had post our time in Putrajaya,” she said.
“I may not like everything I heard, but I know you were honest in answering these questions. And this is what I like about you – your honesty, even if it means losing votes.”
Thanking him for giving up his time to return as prime minister, she said there were many Malaysians who still wished him well and want “the happiest birthday” for him.
“I may never live till I’m 95, but I know even if I do, I cannot do what you have done in the last few years – persistent in fighting those involved in 1MDB.
“Happiest 95th Birthday Tun!”
