Redzuan Yusoff said the council would consider the move to strengthen the party, if necessary.
Speaking at a press conference at Parliament here today, he said there had been some problems with overlapping support from the grassroots for both chairman and president.
“There must only be one captain on one ship,” he added.
Redzuan, one of PPBM’s founders, said the position of chairman was created when Mahathir was invited to join the party.
He added that the party, initially set up by Muhyiddin, had “made way” for Mahathir.
“Mahathir was invited to become a member, and he became an advisor to the party.
“I, as one of the founders, can say that the party was giving way to a nationalist by including in the constitution a chairman’s post (for him),” he said.
Mahathir, who recently fell out with PPBM, announced last week that he would set up a new independent Malay political party.
He said the former PPBM founders needed to create a new party to fight corruption as the other Malay parties had strayed from their original path.
His announcement was followed by defections from PPBM by members who reported dissatisfaction with the party’s direction under Muhyiddin’s leadership.
In Selangor, several divisions have split over claims of dissolution while Mohd Sufian Mat Yunus, the head of the Bangi division, announced its cessation today following the lead of four other divisions which said they had lost faith in the party leadership.
However, Redzuan said there were “no issues” with party leaders jumping ship as the party constitution allows the Supreme Council to elect new division heads.
“There is not one division that has been dissolved,” he added. “Division leaders will be elected as soon as possible in accordance with party regulations.”
Adding that PPBM was in “no hurry”, he said it could always carry out polls at the division level and for the Supreme Council.
“The Supreme Council will take over to ensure that the divisions are still functioning and operating normally.”
He also said those who had announced the dissolution of party divisions did not fully understand the constitution.
