New Covid-19 cases almost at par with recoveries

The health ministry reports 25 more infections while an additional 28 patients have been discharged.

PETALING JAYA:
The health ministry reported 25 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, with 16 imported and nine local transmissions.

They bring the total number of positive cases so far to 9, 200.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah also said 28 recoveries were recorded, bringing the number of those discharged to 8,859.

He said there were still 216 active cases receiving treatment as of noon today, with seven needing respiratory assistance.

No new deaths were reported, with the toll remaining at 125.

Noor Hisham said the nine local transmissions involve seven Malaysians and two foreigners.

From the seven, five are from the Tawar cluster in Kedah and one under the same cluster in Penang. They bring the total number of cases under this cluster to 39.

In Sabah, a positive case was detected just before undergoing surgery at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu.

The other two local cases involving foreigners were detected in Kuala Lumpur.

The 16 imported cases were from Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, India, Pakistan, Thailand, Hong Kong, Japan, Yemen, Lebanon and the UK.

Noor Hisham said the ministry had carried out swabs on 899 individuals in the Tawar cluster in Kedah, Perak and Penang.

In Kedah, of the 727 swabs carried out, 35 tested positive and 643 negative while another 48 are awaiting results.

In Penang, 164 individuals were tested and four came out positive and 154 negative, with another five awaiting results.

In Perak, eight swabs were taken, with five proving negative and three awaiting results.

Kuching Jetty cluster declared closed

Sarawak authorities have declared the Kuching Jetty Cluster of cases officially closed today as all patients have recovered and have been allowed to return home.

The cluster involved two foreigners from a fishing company based at a jetty in Pending, Kuching. “The cluster has been successfully contained,” the state disaster management committee said today.

Seven other clusters are still active in Sarawak: namely Engineering Firm Cluster; Mambong Cluster; Stutong Market Cluster; Sentosa Cluster; Melbourne PUI Cluster; Kuching Construction Company Cluster; and Satok Market Cluster.

No new cases were reported today.
