Speaking to FMT, Redzuan said it seems the party is trying to apply pressure on Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to agree with its terms, adding that this could affect the due process some leaders are facing.
“It is expected, as Umno is using the situation to pile more pressure onto the prime minister to accede to some new terms (involving) a few of their leaders.
“Personally, (I’m) not surprised,” he said when asked to comment on Umno’s announcement yesterday.
Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan had said the party was mulling over its support for PN, and would propose new terms to the government to ensure the political cooperation would continue.
He also said Umno would propose to Muafakat Nasional (MN) for the alliance to be registered as a political party.
“We will present the conditions to the prime minister tomorrow,” he told reporters after a five-hour long closed-door meeting at the party’s headquarters last night.
Meanwhile, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said they will be expecting an explanation from Umno about their statement. He said they would discuss the matter through MN.
“We are confident that anything can be resolved through internal discussions among all parties involved,” he told FMT.
Umno’s announcement came after PKR president Anwar Ibrahim was granted an audience by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong yesterday morning.
Anwar previously claimed he had the support of MPs to form a new government, adding that the majority of them consisted of Bumiputera MPs.
