PETALING JAYA:
Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin is seeking an audience with the King today, according to sources.

It is believed to be regarding the use of special emergency powers due to the spike in Covid-19 cases in Malaysia.

A source indicated that Muhyiddin had rushed to the east coast for the audience, following the Special Emergency Meeting held with Cabinet ministers earlier today.

This comes after speculation that the Perikatan Nasional government may seek a declaration of emergency as Covid-19 cases hover around 700 to 800 daily.

FMT has been made to understand that the King is in Pahang, and the meeting is set to take place at 5pm today.

However, a minister told FMT that not everyone was agreeable to declaring an emergency because of the implications on the economy and how it would be perceived by the people.

The minister said he believes there is concern over the possibility that the budget may not be passed.

If the budget is not passed, it would signal that the MPs have lost confidence in the prime minister and the government.

Several MPs have also submitted motions seeking a vote of no confidence against Muhyiddin.

If an emergency is declared, the Dewan Rakyat would have to be suspended.

It was reported earlier today that Muhyiddin chaired a special Cabinet meeting in Putrajaya with all ministers present.

Article 150 of the Federal Constitution states that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong may declare a state of emergency if the security, economy or public order of the nation is threatened.
