Ministers must resign for Covid-19 failure, says Guan Eng

DAP sec-gen says the government has failed to announce any plan to rescue jobs and businesses following MCO extension.

Lim Guan Eng says several ministers must be removed because they had failed to do their jobs.
PETALING JAYA:
Malaysians are losing their jobs and businesses through no fault of their own and those responsible for this state of affairs – the Perikatan Nasional (PN) ministers – must resign, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng says.

In a statement, Lim said PN government has let Malaysians down by failing to announce any concrete and substantial financial package to rescue the economy following the extension of the movement control order (MCO) to Feb 18.

Whilst Chinese New Year celebrations will be muted and severely affected, what is of greater significance is the absence of an all-out commitment to save jobs and businesses, he said.

“The ministers who have failed to do their jobs should be replaced.

“Ministers responsible for health, tourism, welfare, human resources and economy must resign for failing to save jobs and businesses, especially the beleaguered tourism industry, and the gross incompetency in managing the Covid-19 public health crisis.

“As of Feb 2, Malaysia has recorded 222,628 cases, 47,847 which are active and 791 deaths. The PN government has succeeded in turning Malaysia into the worst Covid-19 Asean nation in per capita terms,” he said.

He also criticised Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin for prioritising his political survival by suspending Parliament, instead of bearing responsibility for the failure.

Apart from the failure to save jobs and business, he said the decline in foreign direct investment (FDI) was another evidence of the PN’s “incompetence”.

“Malaysia’s actual FDI last year was down 68%, compared to the average contraction of the Asean region of 31% and the global average contraction of 42%,” he added.
