KUALA LUMPUR:
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says party delegates have left it to him and the party’s supreme council to determine when to withdraw support for the Perikatan Nasional government.

Speaking at the close of the party’s assembly here today, he said the party leadership could now decide to retract Umno’s support for the government at any time, if there is no indication of a general election soon.

Later, at a press conference after his speech, Zahid said Umno delegates had tabled a motion, which was unanimously accepted, for him and the supreme council to urge that a general election be held when the emergency ends, either on Aug 1 as scheduled, or at an earlier date.

He said the motion will be discussed at the supreme council’s next meeting, and he urged all party members to comply with this decision since it was made at the general assembly, Umno’s highest decision-making platform.

“There should not be any accusations that Umno is at crossroads,” he warned.

In his speech earlier, he had said: “I’m confident that our comrades who are ministers, deputy ministers, chairmen of government-linked companies and even all our MPs will totally accede to the party’s decision to withdraw support for PN”.
