We’ll all quit govt positions by August, says Umno man

Tajuddin Abdul Rahman affirms general assembly decision to pull out of PN government.

PETALING JAYA:
Umno members serving as ministers, deputy ministers and GLC chairmen will all quit their positions by August, according to the party’s election director, Tajuddin Abdul Rahman.

In an interview with FMT, he affirmed the decision Umno made at its recent general assembly that it would withdraw its support for the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government in August if the prime minister failed to dissolve Parliament by then.

“Ministers, deputy ministers, GLC chairmen will quit,” he said. “The government will collapse.”

Umno currently forms the largest bloc in the PN governing alliance.

Tajuddin, who is chairman of Prasarana Malaysia, said he would quit the position when the time was right. “I will follow the decision of the Umno annual general assembly. I will hold the position till Parliament is dissolved.”

He said it was because of PPBM’s sustained criticism of Umno that the party had decided to stop cooperating with it.

“PPBM says Umno has gone down the drain, that it is full of corruption,” he said, calling the criticism a “betrayal”.

He said Umno should instead be credited for its success in developing the country.

“Look at the country’s development. It was not like this 20 or 30 years ago. Today Kuala Lumpur is a world class city.”

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has said the party’s supreme council members had approved the decision to stop supporting the PN coalition. Others who have made similar calls include Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah and Padang Rengas MP Nazri Aziz.

Pasir Puteh Umno division chief Zawawi Othman, has already resigned from a company linked to the Perikatan Nasional-led government after the party formalised its decision to end cooperation with PPBM.

Zawawi announced his immediate resignation as chairman of Kesedar Kilang Sdn Bhd in Pasir Puteh on Wednesday. Kesedar Kilang is a company owned by Lembaga Kemajuan Kelantan Selatan.

In January, Machang MP Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub resigned as chairman of the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), after just eight months on the job.
