Lim Chee Wee denied having made any such statements as shown in the text messages contained in a screenshot while Rosli Dahlan said his name was mentioned without any basis.
The screenshots that named them and which called for a matter pending in court to be “settled” were published by Sarawak Report editor Clare Rewcastle Brown.
In a statement, Lim said he had lodged a police report on the purported text messages and will give his full cooperation to the police in their investigations.
He said the text messages contained fabrications and baseless allegations against him.
“I never made any such statements in the text messages. I do not know the party which allegedly sent the purported text messages,” he said.
Lim, a former president of the Malaysian Bar, also said the company named in the text message was no longer a client as he had left his former firm in June 2020.
“I am not involved in any alleged settlement and appeal involving the company. I have not communicated with or been involved in any way with the company for a year.
“Therefore, these recent text messages, purportedly quoting me, are blatantly false. This is a case of criminal defamation,” he said.
In a police report sighted by FMT, Rosli said his name in the text message was entered without any basis, adding that he had no knowledge of the dispute shown in the screenshot and had never dealt with any of the parties involved.
“I do not represent any party in the case. I have not been appointed as an advocate or counsel and have no direct or indirect involvement with the disputes referred to in the case.
“I have nothing to do with this matter and my name has been used falsely.
“The publication of the screenshot has been deliberately disseminated to tarnish my good name as a lawyer before the judges of the courts in Malaysia and among the legal community,” he said.
Following a news report on the alleged messages, a special officer to Chief Justice (CJ) Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat had lodged a police report on the matter for allegedly bringing the judiciary into disrepute.
Sepang district police chief Wan Kamarul Azran Wan Yusoff confirmed the report was made on June 7 and an investigation is under way.
Sources told FMT that among the text messages was one to a foreign client stating “the path is covered till the CJ”.
It is learnt that the messages were in connection with two civil appeals pending before the Court of Appeal.
