Thanking the various corporations, businesses and members of the public who have been helping those in need, the PKR president said he hoped to see government leaders following suit.
“I want to thank all those who have come forward to help, whether they see a white flag or not,” he said in a video on Facebook, referring to the grassroots initiative to provide immediate food and assistance to those in need.
“Just remember, we shouldn’t be like some leaders who use government money to provide aid with a lot of publicity, but do not contribute anything from their own pocket.
“We want to see more responsibility. Of course, they should also make full use of the government’s budget (to provide aid), with the private sector and public helping as well. But we want to see leaders donating money from their own income and allowances as well.”
Anwar also voiced his support for the white flag campaign which encourages those struggling financially to reach out for help without fear or shame by displaying a white flag in front of their home.
Noting the condemnation of the campaign by some parties who look upon it as a sign of surrender, Anwar said it was more important that the rakyat’s basic needs are met.
“What’s the problem here?” he asked, before adding: “The problem is some people are going through some hard times and they’re just asking for help!
“Whatever colour flag they’re flying, or even if they are not flying any flag, just help if you can.”
