Klang MP Charles Santiago said that with the pressure mounting against the government from all sides, there is little choice left but for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, his Cabinet, Dewan Rakyat speaker Azhar Azizan Harun and his deputies to step down.
“That is, if they have an ounce of shame.”
In a statement, Santiago called using the “ruse of Covid-19 infections” as a reason to defer today’s sitting “childish,” and said the police blocking the road to Parliament was an affront to justice.
He said Muhyiddin was “buying time” because he lacked answers to explain the revocation of the emergency ordinances which the Palace has said was done without the consent of the Yang-di-Pertuan Agong.”
“The rakyat are not stupid. They know that the manoeuvring is to prevent lawmakers from voting on the emergency, which would clearly show Muhyiddin only has a wafer-thin majority, if at all.”
He said protests like the one held today by opposition MPs, the #Lawan rally that occurred yesterday and the Hartal Doktor Kontrak walkout last week showed that pressure was mounting against the government from among the public.
“We are also witnessing the government using the police as a tool to curb legitimate dissent. These protests won’t stop because the people have had it and their patience has run out.”
“It’s embarrassing to hold on to power despite having been caught out, and especially when good governance is needed to mitigate the consequences of a raging pandemic.”
