It’s a silver, but Malaysians give a gold to Azizulhasni

Netizens and government leaders join the nation in congratulating the cyclist’s Olympic success.

With national cyclist Azizulhasni Awang bringing home a silver medal from the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, government leaders and netizens alike have been quick to congratulate him for his success.

Among the leaders were Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, his deputy Ismail Sabri Yaakob and youth and sports minister Reezal Merican Naina Merican.

Muhyiddin said his success would definitely add cheer to the Malaysian contingent before the games come to a close today.

“Whatever its colour, the medal you won at the world’s biggest sporting stage has a very significant meaning for you and the country, as we could see the Jalur Gemilang being raised.

“All the people of Malaysia are truly proud of your achievement and fighting spirit.”

Reezal said that although Azizulhasni could not fulfil his personal dream of presenting the country with its first Olympic gold medal, “The Pocket Rocketman” had always displayed a fierce fighting spirit.

On social media, the accolades for Azizulhasni kept coming in.

Twitter user @syz_syzwni said: “What a proud achievement. Congratulations Azizulhasni Awang on the (silver) medal. Very proud.”

@gyeomieschoco said: “Thank you Azizulhasni Awang for winning silver. Malaysians are very proud of you and thank you for your hard work.”

Another said: “Watching Azizulhasni win silver just now reminds us all that in the most stressful, toughest moments, we can achieve so much, we can overcome the impossible if we keep trying and believe in ourselves.”

On a similar note, user @skeletoncidae said she was really proud of Azizulhasni and added that she was inspired by him to do better and to never give up on her dreams.

Ashton Jhonson also sent out a congratulatory tweet and commended Azizulhasni’s hard work.

“Heartiest congratulations for winning a silver medal in the Olympics, Azizulhasni Awang. You’ve made Malaysia proud. We know it’s very hard to be at the highest level over the years and coming back to win a medal is something exceptional,” he said.

Hanisah Rahman said: “It might be a silver (medal) in the Olympics, but we Malaysians see it as a gold medal in our eyes. Thank you, Azizulhasni Awang. You are a true champion.”
