PETALING JAYA:
The Kedah government will be distributing cash aid of RM500 to each family affected by the “kepala air” (water column) tragedy in Yan and Kuala Muda.

Menteri besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor said the aid was to help families with cleaning and replacement work after the floods.

“For the families of victims who lost their lives to this tragedy, the government will provide RM5,000 to them,” he said in a statement.

Affected families may register for aid at the Yan and Kuala Muda district offices.

“As a first step, the families are advised to lodge a police report and register their names and other personal details with their respective district offices,” he said.

Sanusi said based on initial reports, some 800 houses in Yan and 200 in Kuala Muda had been affected by the mud floods.

He said assistance to repair damaged non-residential and government buildings was still under discussion.

He previously explained that the floods were due to natural causes after heavy rain on Gunung Jerai caused a river to overflow, bringing mud and debris to villages at the foot of the hill.
