PETALING JAYA:
A medical body has cautioned flood victims and those involved in rescue efforts to follow SOPs “as much as they can” to avoid being infected with the Covid-19 virus and other pathogens from floodwaters.

Malaysian Medical Association president Dr Koh Kar Chai said face masks must be worn at all times and hands sanitised as social distancing might be difficult to follow during rescue efforts.

“Cleaning with soap and clean water is crucial in preventing skin diseases and infections,” he said in a statement.

Contaminated floodwater could cause skin irritation, gastrointestinal issues, cholera, tetanus and, in some cases, leptospirosis which could be fatal, he warned.

He also called for donations to be sent to the MMA’s Disaster Relief Fund which is being used to help flood victims.

Donations can be sent to the Malaysian Medical Association’s United Overseas Bank account number at 257 303 2332.

For enquiries, the public can call 018 277 8794 or email the MMA at [email protected].
