
But, he said, the figures still remained lower than that caused by the last Delta variant wave, adding that vaccines had proven to be effective in reducing the worst effects of the virus.
“The mortality data so far this year showed 91% of Covid-19 deaths were people who had not taken a booster dose.
“It is clear that booster doses provide protection, especially for the elderly who are most vulnerable to Covid-19,” he said on Twitter today, providing a chart to show deaths were significantly higher among those who were unvaccinated or had yet to receive booster doses.
Khairy also noted that the percentage of deaths out of the total cases had reduced.
He said for every 100,000 cases, there were 200 deaths. The percentage of deaths had reduced as the majority of Covid-19 cases were not serious, he added.
He then urged high-risk groups – seniors and those with serious comorbidities – to get a booster shot immediately.
“We ask families and communities to monitor the health condition of the elderly. If symptoms such as fever or a slight cough arise, please see a doctor,” he said.
