Kuala Lumpur was hit by a second round of flash floods in three months after heavy rains across the city submerged hundreds of vehicles and caused power outages yesterday, with several highway stretches also closed to traffic.
Debating the King’s address at the Dewan Rakyat today, Kok noted how climate change had resulted in increased rainwater, which the city’s drainage system was simply not designed to cope with.

“During a meeting the federal territories minister held with MPs from Kuala Lumpur last month, YB Arau (Shahidan) said DBKL (Kuala Lumpur City Hall) will approve more high-rise affordable homes,” she said.
“I’m concerned about this. I want him to review all such proposed high-density projects.
“They will contribute to more flash floods in Kuala Lumpur as the drainage system in many areas has not been improved.”
Meanwhile, environment and water minister Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the flash floods in the city yesterday were due to “unusually heavy rain”, with up to half a month’s rain recorded in just two hours.
