His statement comes days after it was reported that Parti Sarawak Bersatu assemblyman See Chee How would be tabling a motion in the upcoming state assembly “to resolve, declare, reiterate and reaffirm” the Petroleum Development Act (PDA) 1974, the Continental Shelf Act (CSA) 1966 and the Territorial Seas Act (TSA) 2012.
There have been calls to repeal all three Acts. It had been previously argued, for instance, that the PDA was a breach of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
The Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chairman also thanked Sarawakians for placing their trust in the coalition to continue leading the state, according to Borneo Post.
Last year, the coalition won 76 out of the 82 seats in the state elections.
Abang Johari previously promised that his government would continue to push for Sarawak’s rights – under the Federal Constitution and MA63 – to be upheld.
In December, the Dewan Negara passed a bill to amend the Federal Constitution in line with the provisions in MA63.
Meanwhile, Abang Johari said he fully supported a move to hold a media convention in view of the media’s role in disseminating information to the public.
The state’s deputy minister in the premier’s department (corporate affairs and public-private partnership unit) Abdullah Saidol had said a media convention would be held in the near future where journalists would draft a media code of ethics, among other things.
Abang Johari said: “When it comes to journalism, ethics are important. Surely, we need the involvement of credible and experienced individuals in the field of journalism to share their views in formulating a proper code of ethics.”
