No early elections for PAS-held states, says party vice-president

Idris Ahmad says the party leadership made the decision some time ago that the government should focus on staying the course.

PAS vice-president Idris Ahmad said the party wanted the government to focus on completing its term of office and solving the people’s problems.
PETALING JAYA:
The three states run by PAS governments will not call for early elections before the end of the term of their state assemblies, a party leader said.

PAS vice-president Idris Ahmad said the matter was decided by the party leadership some time ago and remained valid at present – “What will happen later, we do not know,” he said, according to a Malaysia Gazette report.

PAS currently controls the state governments of Kelantan, Kedah, and Terengganu. In March, leaders of Pakatan Harapan said the PH state governments of Selangor, Penang, and Negeri Sembilan would stay in office to complete a full term.

Idris made his comment following a statement by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang that Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s government should be given the opportunity to govern the country until the end of the parliamentary term.

Hadi had said a good time to hold the next general election would be after Parliament’s term had expired.

The 14th Parliament was called into session on July 16, 2018. Its five-year term will expire in July next year, and elections must be called within 60 days of its expiry, or by mid-September at the latest.

Idris, who is a minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, said it was better for the government to focus on finishing the term and solving the people’s problems.
