PETALING JAYA:
Police will question former attorney-general (AG) Apandi Ali at Bukit Aman tomorrow in connection with reports lodged against him alleging that he had abused his power while handling the 1MDB scandal.

In a brief statement, police secretary Noorsiah Saaduddin said that Bukit Aman’s classified investigation unit (D5) will be recording Apandi’s statement at 2.30pm.

While the reason behind his questioning was not mentioned in the statement, it comes three days after the D5 unit said that it has started an investigation into Apandi over three police reports lodged against him over the matter.

Klang MP Charles Santiago was among the complainants who alleged that the former AG had abused his power while investigating the 1MDB scandal when serving under the Najib Razak-led government.

He referred to High Court judge Azimah Omar’s judgment on Apandi’s civil suit against DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang, where she remarked that the former AG’s delegation did not meet or speak to the alleged Saudi royal family donor despite saying otherwise at a media conference on Jan 26, 2016.

Azimah said this in her judgment when dismissing the defamation suit filed by Apandi against Lim.

Noorsiah also said that the case would be investigated under Section 217 of the Penal Code for disobeying a direction of law with the intent to save a person from punishment, or property from forfeiture as a public servant.

On July 29, MalaysiaNow reported Apandi as saying that he would cooperate with the police in their investigation following the reports lodged against him.

He was in the spotlight again recently after he was reported to have acted as a “middleman” in talks between the government and fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho, or Jho Low.

On July 16, Apandi was reported by The Malaysian Insight as saying that he had arranged meetings between the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) and Jho Low’s representatives at the end of May.

He also said the purpose of the meetings was to discuss the repatriation of monies allegedly siphoned by Jho Low from 1MDB.

On the same day, the AGC confirmed that Jho Low had made several attempts to settle cases against him but these were rejected.

Apandi had since been asked to explain himself over his roles in arranging these meetings by several parties, notably former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, former finance minister Lim Guan Eng and Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh.
