Doughnut seller refuses to let disability hamper spirit to live independently

Zaitun Ibrahim, who is also stateless despite being born in Malaysia, hopes the government will grant her the MyKad she has yearned for a long time.

Zaitun Ibrahim is grateful that her doughnut business is doing well at Padang Polo, Ipoh.
IPOH:
Zaitun Ibrahim refuses to let her disability hamper her spirit to carry out her own doughnut-making business without depending on public sympathy.

She was born without legs and a left hand.

Zaitun and her husband, Haizol Yit, often look for ideas to improve their business. YouTube has become her go-to site to learn various skills such as weaving baskets, making bouquets, and learning recipes of new ‘kuih’ to be sold.

“Now, I am actively selling doughnuts at Padang Polo (in Ipoh), where I make the dough with my only hand,” she told FMT.

“I would like to prove that I can be independent and not reliant on others.”

Despite her resilience, Zaitun admits that she faces hardship being stateless, which deprives her of much-needed help from the government.

Despite being born in Malaysia, she does not have her own identity card as her Thai parents did not register her birth.

Because of her stateless status, she found herself unable to go to school, getting disability assistance from the welfare department (JKM), and joining skills programmes that would make her employable.

“I could not even register my business with the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) as well as get free healthcare from government hospitals,” she said.

She hopes that the government would grant her the much-awaited MyKad one day.

Zaitun also hopes some kind Samaritans could give her a flour kneading machine to help her increase her sales of kuih, and a freezer so she can start a frozen kuih business.
