KUALA LUMPUR:
Umno Supreme Council member Azalina Othman Said took a veiled dig at Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob over the retention of Idrus Harun as attorney-general (AG).

In a speech in front of over 3,000 Umno members at a special briefing in the party’s headquarters, Azalina spoke on the wide-ranging and unquestionable powers of an AG.

“Whoever becomes prime minister will (usually) appoint one of their own to become the AG,” she said to thunderous applause from the floor.

Idrus was appointed as AG after Muhyiddin Yassin took office as the eighth prime minister.

Today’s gathering has seen several Umno leaders and lawyers speak on former prime minister Najib Razak’s jailing.

Najib was sent to Kajang prison on Tuesday after the Federal Court upheld his conviction and sentence of 12 years’ jail and RM210 million fine in the SRC International case.

Earlier, Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan called for justice for Najib to cheers from the crowd.

Others in attendance were Najib’s children Nizar and Nooryana Najwa, who also addressed the crowd to cries of “Hidup Bossku”.
