TikTok asked to remove over 300 videos in last 2 years, says Fahmi

The communications and digital minister says the content was in violation of Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

TikTok announced that it would no longer allow political advertisements under a new policy.
PETALING JAYA:
Between 2020 and January 2023, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) made 346 requests to TikTok to take down or erase contents from the social media site.

In a parliamentary reply to Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden (PN-Alor Setar), communications and digital minister Fahmi Fadzil said 325 (94%) of the agency’s requests were successful.

“At the same time, 23 investigation papers were opened by MCMC under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. Of these, two were issued warning letters, while 21 cases are under investigation,” Fahmi said.

Section 233(2) prohibits knowingly using a network service or applications service to provide obscene communication to a person for commercial purposes or permitting a “network service or applications service under the person’s control” to be used for that purpose.

Action can be taken against accounts that misuse the platform to spread obscene content, discord, fake news and threats as provided under Section 233.

Earlier today, TikTok said it had banned political advertisements from its platform in line with its revised policy.
