Selangor’s GDP contribution proves Azmin wrong, says Amirudin

Menteri besar Amirudin Shari tells his predecessor to compare the job opportunities and wage level in Selangor to other states.

PETALING JAYA:
Selangor contributing a record 25.5% to the national gross domestic product (GDP) last year debunks Azmin Ali’s claim that the state has performed poorly in drawing investments, says menteri besar Amirudin Shari.

Amirudin said the GDP contribution proved that the Pakatan Harapan state government had a great track record in ensuring Selangor remained the state with the biggest economy in the country.

He added that Selangor has had consistent growth in foreign direct investment (FDI) since 2018, which was when Amirudin took over as menteri besar from Azmin.

“This proves that we are still very attractive (to investors). If we don’t do well one year and then perform weakly the following year, that would reflect a lack of planning,” Amirudin said in a press conference at an event in Gombak.

The menteri besar also told Azmin that there were higher wages and greater job opportunities available in Selangor compared to other states.

At a Perikatan Nasional ceramah last week, Azmin claimed that Selangor had fallen behind other states in terms of FDI.

But Amirudin dismissed his former PKR colleague’s remarks, saying it was “just mind games”.

He claimed Selangor drew its highest amount of FDI last year at RM18 billion, compared to the RM5 billion to RM7 billion that the state attracted annually when Azmin was menteri besar.

Yesterday, Amirudin announced that Selangor contributed a record 25.5% to the national GDP last year, an increase of 0.7% compared to its performance in 2021.
