More evacuated as floods continue in Perak, Kedah

In Perlis meanwhile, evacuees return home as the floods subside.

Perak and Kedah saw a slight increase in the number of flood evacuees this morning, while the floods in Perlis have fully subsided.

Bernama reported that the number of evacuees in Perak rose to 217 people from 62 families this morning, compared with 210 from 61 families last night.

The state’s disaster management committee secretariat said two relief centres are still open in Hilir Perak, at the Padang Tembak multipurpose hall which is housing 109 people from 32 families and the Chikus multipurpose hall which is housing 19 people from five families.

“In Kerian, 23 people from four families are still taking shelter at SK Changkat Lobak, while the number of evacuees housed at SK Alor Pongsu remains unchanged at 57 people from 19 families.

“In Kinta, nine people from two families from Taman Meru 2C are at the Taman Meru 2A community hall, while all 19 people from the six families who took shelter at the Kampung Sri Kinta community hall have returned to their respective homes,” it said.

In Kedah, the number of people evacuated to relief centres increased to 107 people from 31 last night.

Kedah Civil Defence Force (CDF) disaster management secretariat chief Suhaimi Zain said that in Kota Setar, the victims are being housed at SK Titi Gajah and SMK Alor Merah.

“These two relief centres were opened at 5.30pm and 11pm yesterday to accommodate 76 people from 27 families.

“Among the affected areas are Kampung Seberang Chegar, Kampung Alor Gunung, Kampung Pulau Kerengga, Kampung Alor Senjaya, Kampung Alor Perang, Kampung Bohor and Kampung Anak Bukit,” he said in a statement.

Suhaimi said that in Kubang Pasu, the number of evacuees housed at SK Malau remains unchanged at 31 people from seven families.

The centre was opened on Monday following three hours of continuous heavy rain that resulted in flooding in several areas, including Kampung Paya Tok Keong, Kampung Paya Tok Teh and Kampung Biak.

Meanwhile, in Perlis, the floods have fully subsided, with the Titi Tinggi Hilir hall relief centre in Padang Besar closed at 8am today.

State CDF director Izaimi Daud said all 41 victims from the 12 families evacuated to the centre have been allowed to return home.
