Fahmi to meet Google after primary school kid accesses porn on phone

The communications minister hopes to meet officials of the search engine giant next week to resolve the issue.

A Primary One pupil was able to access pornography on a mobile phone by keying in a certain word.
PETALING JAYA:
Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil plans to meet with Google officials following a complaint by a teacher that a student had watched pornography on YouTube.

Fahmi said he hoped to meet officials of the search engine giant next week.

He said this in response to a social media posting by a teacher who claimed that a Primary One pupil was able to access pornography on YouTube by keying in a certain word.

The teacher discovered this after the pupil had performed an “obscene gesture” in class.

He then handed his smartphone to the pupil and asked the pupil to show what he watched on YouTube.

The teacher said he was surprised as the majority of the pupils in the class could not read or even spell.

“I, along with MCMC, will meet Google to resolve this matter,” Fahmi said on X, referring to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.

Several of his followers, however, said that the blame lay with the parents.

One person, who identified himself as Shatiskumar, said it was ridiculous that “instead of talking to parents, you (Fahmi) want to talk to Google”.

Another, known as Firdaus, said Fahmi should work with the education minister to raise awareness, while Norhisyam suggested that the minister launch a campaign on setting parental control options in gadgets using Google.
